Craig Stecyk

Craig R. Stecky III was born in 1951 in Los Angeles, California. He is an American artist, photographer, and journalist who is most well-known for his articles and photos in the 1970’s that chronicled the skateboard movement and ressurection. Stecyk was
originally a co-founder and artist at the Jeff Ho and Zephyr Productions surf shop in Santa Monica, California.
When skateboarding grew increasingly popular, the Zephyr shop created a skateboarding team and Stecyk began to photograph the team and the movement as a whole. He also wrote articles for Skatebaorder Magazine, which are now known as the “Dogtown Articles.”
The photographs that Stecyk took captured the attitude that came with the skatebaording movement, and essentially popularized the aggressive nature of skateboarding.
Stecyk later went on to work with Stacy Peralta, one of the original members of the Zephyr skateboarding team. They worked together on several films and Stecyk helped to advertise Peralta’s brand, Powell-Peralta.
What I greatly appreciate about Stecyk is that he didn’t use any “tricks” on his photographs. They’re black and white and have had little to no editing done on them. I think that that is something truly amazing and I tried to take from that style with my own photographs. I kept them black and white and have not edited them. I also chose to  photograph a similar subject matter, and attempt to capture some of the attitude that Stecyk captured.
